EXECUTIVE PASTOR JOB DESCRIPTION

Expedition Church is seeking a strategic leader and administrative overseer responsible for ensuring the day-to-day operations of the church align with its mission, vision, and values. This role focuses on the coordination and management of church staff, ministries, and resources to effectively support and enhance spiritual growth and engagement.


GENERAL OVERVIEW

A great Executive Pastor will be a leader who is humble enough to submit and confident enough to lead. Their approach must be pastoral with both people and process, demonstrating the heart of a servant. Daily prayer for wisdom and discernment is paramount. They will, first and foremost, be a spiritual leader with a heart for supporting those around them. He should be able to see the big picture while paying attention to details. It is a challenging role that involves long-range, prayerful planning and being responsive in the moment, problem solving as needs arise. This position requires a person who both strategically comprehensive and operationally detailed. The Executive Pastor works in a close partnership with the Lead Pastor and must strive for a harmonious and collaborative relationship. He should seek to know and understand the heart, vision, goals and desires of the Lead Pastor and Elders looking at every situation or opportunity through that lens.


THE ROLE


General Leadership

Assists the Lead Pastor in overseeing staff and ministry leaders, leading weekly meetings, and managing the church calendar with a focus on both short- and long-term planning.


Financial Oversight

Helps create and manage the annual budget, overseeing accounting, reporting, and supporting staff in managing ministry budgets.


Human Resource Management

Coaches staff and volunteers, handles HR functions like vacation and insurance, and collaborates with the Lead Pastor on staffing decisions and annual reviews.


Property Oversight

Plans facility improvements, oversees maintenance and event setups, and coordinates church events and outreach programs.


Business Administration

Develops policies, ensures legal and financial compliance, manages IT functions, and supervises the Common Grounds Manager.


SKILLS

  • A positive, natural leader skilled in project management, prioritizing tasks, and keeping teams on track.
  • Capable of recruiting, training, and supporting volunteers, ensuring they feel valued.
  • Known for strong communication skills and trusted to complete tasks with integrity.
  • Enjoys improving systems for efficiency. Highly organized, tech-savvy, and a self-starter who identifies and meets needs instinctively.
